Tom Piper MBE in conversation with fellow
theatre designer Michael Pavelka

Tom was Associate Designer at the RSC for many years, designing over 40 productions, principally with Artistic Director, Michael Boyd. His other productions involved collaborations with directors such as Sam West, Polly Teale, Tim Supple, Erica Whyman and Sam Mendes, one of his latest productions being Hamnet.
His work in Stratford drew him into theatre consultancy whereby he made a major contribution to the design of the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre space. Tom has also championed the creation a number of schemes to support the next generation of young designers.
He has diversified into exhibition design, including the acclaimed British Museum exhibition Shakespeare; Staging the World in 2012, Blood at the Jewish Museum and Curtain up, Winnie the Pooh and Alice; Curiouser and Curiouser, for the V&A Museum. He has just opened a new immersive exhibition, Living with Death, for the Humboldt Forum in Berlin.
His collaboration with Paul Cummins on the installation at The Tower of London on Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red caught the mood of the nation with over five million visitors. The Tower then invited him to create the installation Beyond the Deepening Shadows to mark the end of the centenary commemorations of WW1. Tom was subsequently awarded the MBE.
